Article by Joel (Nine Nations of North America) Garreau about a topic I am personally interested in: adaptive reuse of big box buildings.

Concept for adding buildings and structured parking in the parking lot of an existing big box.

There is also the book, also titled Big Box Reuse, which I had high hopes for, but which I found rather uninspiring.  Perhaps it’s because the book deals with real-world cases, rather than unlimited budget concepts, but the uses and adaptations seemed meager and did not really stretch the existing big box in compelling ways.  For the most part, they seemed to be simply new uses that didn’t have much budget but needed a lot of square footage, so they moved into an available, vacant big box.
